Charles Stewart, 3rd Duke of Richmond

Charles Stewart KG (* March 7, 1639 in London, † December 12, 1672 in Elsinore ), was a Scottish nobleman from the Stewart family.

Charles was a son of George Stewart, 9th Seigneur d' Aubigny and his wife, Catherine Howard. He was raised in 1645 for the 1st Earl of Lichfield and 1st Baron Stewart of Newbury. Charles followed in 1660 his cousin Esmé as Duke of Lennox and Richmond.

He has held the offices of a gentleman of the bedchamber, and Lord Lieutenant of Dorset. From 1671-1672 was the Duke English Ambassador to Denmark. Charles was drowned at the age of 33 years and was buried in Westminster Abbey.

Charles Stewart was married three times: his first wife was from 1659 Elizabeth ( 1644-1661 ), daughter of Richard Rogers and widowed Viscountess Mansfield. His second wife was married in 1662 to Margaret ( 1652-1667 ), daughter of Laurence Banaster. He completed his third marriage to Frances Theresa (1648-1702), daughter of Walter Stuart of Blantyre, which was also known as " La Belle Stuart " and coveted by King Charles II as a mistress.

Despite his three marriages, the Duke died without issue. His sister Catherine (1640-1702) succeeded him as Baroness Clifton of Leighton Bromsworld. All his other title reverted to the crown. Charles II gave his son born out of wedlock with Louise de Kérouaille, Charles Lennox, 1st Duke of Richmond.
