Duke of Richmond

Duke of Richmond is a British hereditary title of nobility in the Peerage of England, named after the town of Richmond in North Yorkshire and the surrounding district of Richmondshire, which was created several times for members of the royal houses Tudor and Stuart.

Ancestral home of the family is Goodwood House near Chichester in West Sussex.

Ceremonies

The title (as Duke of Richmond and Somerset ) was first awarded to Henry Fitzroy, the illegitimate son of King Henry VIII and Elizabeth Blount. Because he died childless, the title fell into 1536.

Ludovic Stuart, second Duke of Lennox, was appointed in 1613 to the Earl of Richmond, and in 1623 the Duke of Richmond. As Ludovic died in 1624, fell into this title.

His brother Esmé, Earl of March, but inherited the ( Scottish ) title of the Duke of Lennox. Esme's son James (1612-1655), the 4th Duke of Lennox, was appointed in 1641 to the Duke of Richmond. With the death of his nephew Charles, 3rd Duke of Richmond and Lennox 6th Duke of both titles fell again in 1672.

The third ceremony by King Charles II in 1675 to his illegitimate son Charles Lennox with Louise de Kérouaille, the Duchess of Portsmouth, the two titles reunited.

More titles

In the next generation, the French title of seigneur d' Aubigny fell to the family.

1876, the 6th Duke has also been named Duke of Gordon. The address for the Dukes of Richmond, Lennox and Gordon has since become the Duke of Richmond and Gordon.

Additional titles of Duke are: Earl of March ( created 1675), Earl of Darnley ( created 1675), Earl of Kinrara ( created 1876), Baron Settrington ( created 1675), and Lord Torbolton ( created 1675). The title Earl of March and Baron Settrington were created along with the dignity of the Duke of Richmond in the Peerage of England, Earl of Darney and Lord Torbolton with the Dukedom Lennox in the Peerage of Scotland, and Earl of Kinrara with the title of Duke of Gordon in the Peerage of the United Kingdom.

The eldest son and heir of the Duke used the courtesy title Earl of March and Kinrara.
