Ludovic Stewart, 2nd Duke of Lennox

Ludovic Stewart (* September 29, 1574, † February 16, 1624 ) was a Scottish nobleman from the Stewart family.

Life

Ludovic was a son of Esmé Stewart, 1st Duke of Lennox, and his wife Catherine de Balsac. He succeeded his father in 1583 as Duke of Lennox. Ludovic has held the offices of Lord Lieutenant of Kent, and the Great Chamberlain and High Admiral of Scotland. He was appointed in 1613 to Baron Setringon and Earl of Richmond. 1623 was the elevation to the Duke of Richmond and Earl of Newcastle.

The Duke was instrumental in the colonization of Maine. Richmond Iceland, Cape Richmond and the City of Richmond in Maine are named in his honor.

He died at the age of 49 and was buried in Westminster Abbey. The title of the Duke of Richmond was extinguished with his death; the title of the Duke of Lennox went over to his brother Esmé.

Ludovic Stewart was married three times. His first wife was Sophia ( † before 1590), daughter of William Ruthven, 1st Earl of Gowrie. His second wife he married Jean (approximately 1573-1610 ), daughter of Matthew Campbell and his third marriage, he was awarded Frances († 1639 ), daughter of Thomas Howard, 1st Viscount Howard of Bindon. Despite his three marriages, he left only one born out of wedlock son, Sir John Stewart of Methven.
