James Stewart, 1st Duke of Richmond

James Stewart, 4th Duke of Lennox ( born April 6 in London in 1612, † March 30, 1655 ), KG, was a Scottish nobleman from the Stewart family.

James was a son of Esmé Stewart, 3rd Duke of Lennox and his wife Catherine Clifton, Baroness Clifton. He succeeded his father in 1624 as Duke of Lennox.

He was Privy Counsellor since 1633 and four years later he inherited after the death of his mother, the title of Lord Clifton. He served from 1640 to 1642 the office of Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports and was Lord Steward of the Household since 1641. In 1645 he became president of the council of the Prince of Wales.

1641 James was raised to the Duke of Richmond, the title had already been awarded his uncle Ludovic, with his death, but again extinguished. During the English Civil War James fought for the royalists. He was buried in Westminster Abbey.

The Duke married in 1637 Mary ( 1622-1685 ), daughter of George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham, with whom he had two children:
