Charles Waldstein

Charles Waldstein later Sir Charles Walston, KBE ( born March 30, 1856 in New York City; † March 21, 1927 in Naples) was an English- American archaeologist.

Life

Waldstein was born into a Jewish family in New York City on March 30, 1856. He studied archeology at the Universities at Columbia University in New York, Ruprecht-Karls University of Heidelberg and the University of Cambridge. 1880 Waldstein Professor ( Lecturer ) of Classical Archaeology at Cambridge University and two years later Reader at the same university. From 1883 to 1889 he was director of the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge. In 1883 he received a scholarship at King 's College. In 1889 he came to Athens, and was at the American School of Classical Studies Director. He held until 1893 This body, later he became a professor at the same school. 1895 Waldstein returned back to England and was at the University of Cambridge Slade Professor of Fine Art, he had held the chair until 1901 held. During his time in Greece, he carried out the excavations of the Archaeological Institute of America, the old Plataea near the present Eretria. Waldstein grub, according to its own opinion, the grave of Aristotle, the Heraion of Argos. Later he founded an international committee around the excavations of Herculaneum. Charles Waldstein died 1927.

Olympic Games 1896

Waldstein took part in the Olympic Games in Athens in 1896 as a shooter. He participated in the rifle competition. His result and its place are unknown. It was at these Olympic Games, the oldest participant in the entire field athletes.
