Charles William Mitchell

Charles William Mitchell (* 1854, † 1903) was an English painter from Newcastle.

Mitchell belonged to the group of Pre-Raphaelites. He was a contemporary of John William Waterhouse, who worked as similar to Mitchell. In the 1880s, Mitchell painted several large history paintings and mosaics designed for churches.

Particularly well known is his work Hypatia (1885 ), which was by the novel Hypatia (1853 ) inspired by Charles Kingsley and represents the death of Hypatia of Alexandria. The painting is in the Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle.
