Charmes-sur-Rhône

Charmes- sur -Rhône is a commune with 2437 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in Ardèche, in the Rhône -Alpes. Its inhabitants are called Charmésiens and Charmésiennes.

Geography

The village of Charmes extends along the right bank of the Rhône between Guilherand -Granges and La Voulte -sur -Rhône. Neighboring communities are Saint -Georges- les- Bains and La Voulte -sur -Rhône. The nearest major town is Guilherand Granges - five miles away to the northeast. Within the municipal territory of Embroye river empties into the Rhone River.

History

The feudal castle, which was built on a rock above the town, was formerly in the possession of the Crussol family who had received this for a gift in 1228. By the end of the 15th century it served as the residence of those lords who have been joined by a marriage with the nobles of Uzes. In 1624 the castle on instructions from Richelieu had to be razed. The construction materials was used for the construction of the village and other houses. So also the community center of the community was built. The Roman occupation of the area is confirmed by the existence of numerous cemeteries in the municipality. In ancient times, the village bore the name of Carmi, named after the Latin term for dry soil. Only in 1880 the community was renamed again in Charmes -sur -Rhône.

Culture and sights

Charmes is a place in a picturesque setting, which developed in the Middle Ages within the ramparts. Outside the walls are still numerous water mills on the bank of the Rhone, which were designed to use the abundant water as an energy source for the local dyeing industry.

The Sentier du Troubadour is a nature trail that tourists bring the medieval history of the village closer and runs along the old town center. The terminus is the same tower, from which one can enjoy a panoramic view of the entire Rhone Valley. The neighboring Rue des Vingtins is a small alley that is reminiscent of the tax levied by the lords that allowed them to decrease to one twentieth of the grain harvest of each builder to finance the construction of the city center.

The main entrance to the resort is named after the river Porte d ' Embroye. It lies in a curve and therefore never ran to be stormed with a battering ram danger of fighters.
