Chełmek

Chełmek ( German Chelmek ) is a town in Poland, in the southern part of the province of Lesser Poland.

Geographical location

Katowice is located about 26 kilometers northwest of Krakow and about 55 kilometers east of Chełmek.

History

The first written mention of the village dates from the year 1464. 1795, before the Third Partition of Poland, Chełmek came to Austria. 1815, the city was part of the Republic of Cracow until it was occupied by the Cracow uprising of Austria. In 1856 it was connected to the railway network. After the First World War Chełmek became part of the newly formed Poland. 1939 the Wehrmacht marched into the village. 1941 a satellite camp of KZ Auschwitz was built. On 25 January 1945 the occupation was ended by the Germans and Chełmek was again part of Poland. In 1969, the place obtained its city charter. Six years later, an administrative reform in Poland, the city of the newly formed Province of Bielsko was assigned. By a further reform Chełmek in 1999 part of the Lesser Poland Voivodeship.

Economy and infrastructure

Traffic

Chełmek is located on the Province Road 780 This opens about seven kilometers northwest of the provincial road 44 of Oświęcim Tychy. In the east, the 780 ends in Krakow. The A4 motorway is approximately 5.5 kilometers north of Chełmek. Over these roads the airports Katowice and Kraków-Balice can be achieved.

The town lies on the railway line from Chrzanów after Czechowice- Dziedzice.
