Chessie System

The Chessie System Inc. was an American holding company for several railway companies in the Northeastern United States. The company's headquarters was Cleveland ( Ohio). The route network had a circumference of 17,800 km.

Route network

The route network extended from Newport News on Richmond (Virginia ) to Louisville (Kentucky ), St. Louis, Springfield ( Illinois), Chicago, in the north to Saginaw, Detroit, Buffalo and Rochester (New York), as well as Baltimore and Philadelphia.

History

The Chessie System Inc. was established on 26 February 1973. At this time, the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway took control of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad and both together had more than 90 % of the shares of the Western Maryland Railway. Why were on June 15, 1973 the three railroads subsidiary of the Chessie System.

As a common symbol, the mascot of the C & O Chessie was chosen. However, the individual railway companies retained their plant material as well as their own abbreviations ( reporting marks), but agreed to a new quince- yellow color scheme with red and blue Absetzstreifen.

On 1 November 1980 Chessie System merged with the Seaboard Coast Line Industries, the parent company of the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad, the CSX Corporation. The identity of the railway companies, Chessie System as a common division of the railway companies, however, should be preserved for some time.

With the takeover of the operation of the Western Maryland on 1 May 1983 by the Baltimore & Ohio Chessie the system was reduced to two companies. After the merger of the Chesapeake & Ohio Baltimore & Ohio on the 30 April 1987 was Chessie System only of a society. Therefore, finally took place on 31 August 1987, the merger of the Chessie System in the CSX Transportation.
