Chevilly (Loiret)

Chevilly is a commune with 2571 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in the Loiret in the Centre region. It belongs to Canton Artenay.

Geography

Chevilly located on the edge of the forest of Orléans and the Beauce. Therefore, the village is particularly characterized by agriculture and forestry. The village lies on the Route Nationale 20 Immediately on Chevilly passes the test track of the Aérotrain through which the village was known far.

History

Instead of the place was since 1186 the castle Andeglou. Therefore, the place often wore to the 19th century in sources also that name. The present name dates back to a Gallo- Roman settlement called Seviliacum, which was in the immediate vicinity of Chevilly.

In the German -Prussian War in 1870, the castle of Chevilly of Bavaria was occupied and became their quarters.

Between 1969 and 1978, were carried out on the Aérotrain - route under the leadership of Jean Bertin test drives of the particular vehicle. The Luftkissenzug but never became established, so that the tests were terminated.
