Chibuene

Chibuene is an Iron Age trading city five kilometers south of the present-day Vilanculos on the Indian Ocean in the province of Inhambane in Mozambique today. It is one of the southernmost places that was achieved from trading on the East African coast.

Excavations two levels of occupation could be clearly distinguished. The lower layer dated to the first millennium AD. An exact date of the beginning of colonization is controversial. There is even a date before 600 AD was proposed. The ceramic has similarities with that of Kilwa. There was imported pottery from Arabia and glass beads. Show sheep and cattle bones that these animals have been kept.

The second phase of settlement dating from the thirteenth century to the present. The pottery is similar to part of which was found in Manyikeni or Sofala. Manyikeni located 50 kilometers inland, Great Zimbabwe 350 km.

It was proposed to take the place in the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
