Chief Minister of the Isle of Man

The Chief Minister (English Chief Minister, Manx Ard- choylargh ) the Isle of Man is the executive member of Tynwald, the parliament of the Isle of Man. The Chief Minister is chosen by election of the Members of Tynwald for a five -year term. The incumbent may be re-elected at the end of his term, if he is still a member of Tynwald. The Office of the Chief Minister was created in December 1986. Prior to the Chairman of the Executive Council was head of government.

In November 2006, the last election of a Chief Minister was held after the parliamentary election. Candidates for the House of Keys had before the election of its intention to apply for the post of Chief Minister, do not public. John Shimmin announced in late July that he would apply if he were re-elected. When the application deadline for the position on 25 November, the candidate John Shimmin, Minister of Health Steve Rodan and former Finance Minister David Cannan were. None of the three was the first ballot successfully, since no one could bring the necessary 16 members of Tynwald behind. The speaker of the House of Keys, Tony Brown, was the only candidate in the second ballot on 14 December. He was elected unopposed with 27 votes.
