The Chilean Antarctic Territory ( officially called " Territorio Chileno Antártico ") is a stressed part of Chile Antarctica. It corresponds to the municipality Antártica Antártica Chilena Province in the XII. Region of Chile.

Location

It extends from 53 ° to 90 ° west longitude. The area between 53 ° and 80 ° west longitude is also claimed by Great Britain, the sector between 53 ° and 74 ° west longitude and from Argentina. The territory is administratively under Region XII, based in Punta Arenas. Chile continues to operate several beacon and post offices postal district of Punta Arenas.

History

Chile based its claims on the historical continuity ( succession of Spanish claims, which date back to the Treaty of Tordesillas ), to its position as a neighboring country, on the administrative facilities in the area and on the scientific evidence that Graham Land was the continuation of the Andes.

By Supreme Decree No.. 1747 from November 6, 1940 Chile declared its claims to the Antarctic sector mentioned above. With the entry into force of the Antarctic Treaty on 23 June 1961, the claim was initially postponed. On 11 July 1961, the municipality of La Antártica, Departamento de Magallanes was proclaimed.

Antártica Commune

The municipality Antártica, founded on July 11, 1961 is the only commune of Chile that has no community, it is of the municipality and municipality of Cabo de Hornos (formerly Navarino, based in Puerto Williams) administered from; the community of these two communities is called Cabo de Hornos y Antártica.

The municipality is divided into two census districts, Piloto Pardo and Tierra O'Higgins. Official capital is Puerto Covadonga ( civilian name of the Base General Bernardo O'Higgins ), the only civilian settlement, however, Villa Las Estrellas.
