Chilean presidential election, 2005–2006

In the presidential elections in Chile 2005/2006, the socialist Minister Michelle Bachelet (PS ) (PPD ) was elected as successor of the current Chilean president Ricardo Lagos.

Was already in the first round of the fourth since the Transición presidential election December 11, 2005 Bachelet expected before the right-wing liberal businessman Sebastián Piñera ( RN ), but failed with 45.95 percent of the required absolute majority. In the second ballot on 15 January 2006, Bachelet but then was able to prevail with 53.5 percent supported by the right-wing alliance Alianza por Chile Piñera.

Background

Selection mode

The six -year term by Ricardo Lagos ended on 11 March 2006. Due to a constitutional amendment, the term of office of the new President was then for the first time four years. Were entitled to vote all Chileans aged 18 years, who have registered on the electoral roll.

At the same time the presidential election, the election to the House with 120 members, and the selection of 20 of the 38 senators according to the binomial electoral system took place.

Candidates

Four candidates stood for election on December 11, three of which were set up alliances:

  • For the center- left coalition Concertación, which also continues the former President Ricardo Lagos, a candidate Michelle Bachelet Jeria of the social -democratic Socialist Party (PS). She is since 2002 Minister of Defence of the country.
  • For the right alliance Alianza por Chile Joaquín Lavín Infante candidate of the right-wing Unión Demócrata Independiente (UDI ), who was just defeated in the last election the current President Ricardo Lagos. The Renovación Nacional, actually part of this alliance, since May 2005, supported its own candidate.
  • As the only candidates of a single party candidate Sebastián Piñera Echenique of the right-wing Renovación Nacional ( RN ), which had supported until May Joaquín Lavín.
  • For the leftist coalition Juntos Podemos Más candidate Tomás Hirsch Goldschmidt of the Humanist Party ( PH), who had also occur in the previous presidential election and had received at that time 0.5 % of the vote.
