Chokwe, also Chokwé or Chokue (formerly Vila Trigo de Morais ) is a city in the province of Gaza in Mozambique.
Geography
Chokwe is located approximately 230 km north of the capital Maputo on the south side of the river Limpopo. Chokwe is the capital of the district of the same name.
Population
Chokwe has around 62 453 inhabitants (S 2008). The city experienced a strong influx from the former civil war and agricultural Notgebieten in recent years.
History
The Vila Trigo de Morais then received city rights in 1971 and 1976, after the independence of Mozambique, renamed in Chokwe. In 2000, the city and surrounding areas have suffered from flooding of the Limpopo.
Policy
Chokwe is with elected municipal government since 1998 the municipality. First president of the city council ( Conselho Municipal) was Salomão Tsavane, elected in 1998, followed in 2003 by Jorge Macuácua, re-elected in 2008. Both belong to Frelimo.
Economy and infrastructure
The region is dominated by agriculture. Staple crop are tomatoes.
The city has an airport.
