Chollima

Ch'ŏllima is a creature of the Korean mythology. It is a winged horse that led full 1000 Ri jumps.

Importance in North Korea

In North Korea Ch'ŏllima was after the Korean War as a symbol of reconstruction and industrialization. There the Ch'ŏllima movement was launched in the sixties, in a sense, represented a North Korean counterpart to the Great Leap Forward of the People's Republic of China. In Pyongyang, a 46 -meter-high Ch'ŏllima statue was inaugurated on April 15, 1961 on the occasion of the 49th birthday of Kim Il-sung; the first line of the Metro, Pyongyang is named after Ch'ŏllima, as well as the Maxima Street.
