Choloma is a city in Honduras. It is located in the department of Cortés.

Geographical location

Choloma Bordering the towns of Omoa, Puerto Cortes, San Pedro Sula and Lima. Choloma has two inner cities ( Choloma sector and sector Lopez Arellano ) and consists of a total of 41 villages.

Economy

For the colonial period, especially agriculture was very important in Choloma. This, however, was made ​​to naught repeatedly by numerous floods. Middle of the 19th century came first banana seeds of banana plantations in Jamaica. From this emerged very large banana plantations, especially under participation of the New York Tropical Agricultural Company. A railway line was built to facilitate the export of bananas. This line connected with Choloma San Pedro Sula and Puerto Cortés. Beginning of the 20th century began with the cultivation of sugar cane. 1919 built a sugar mill in La Lima, in which the entire sugar cane was processed from Choloma. In 1936 a large part of the banana crop was lost by the mold Fusarium wilt. Whereupon New York Tropical Agricultural Company strengthened its activities hosted in South America. Farmers therefore focused its activities on poultry farming and the cultivation of citrus fruits. In the 50s the export of wood was important. Nowadays, a large part of the municipality have been identified as a tax- free area, which is why Choloma has become an important industrial city.
