Chris van den Wyngaert

Christine Van Den Wyngaert ( born April 2, 1952 in Antwerp) is a Belgian legal scholar. From 2005 to 2009 she was a judge at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia. In January 2009 she was elected Judge of the International Criminal Court in The Hague and sworn in on 11 March 2009 in this office.

Life

Van Den Wyngaert was 1974, the licentiate in law at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel ( VUB ) and 1975 ibid licentiate in criminology. In 1979, she graduated summa cum laude from the VUB to the doctor juris. From 1974 to 1984 she was a research fellow before in 1985 she was appointed to the University of Antwerp as Full Professor of Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure Law. 1996/97 she lived for research purposes at the University of Cambridge and in 2001 was a visiting professor at the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa. In the case of Arrest Warrant of 11 April 2000 (Democratic Republic of the Congo v. Belgium), she was nominated by Belgium as an ad hoc judge at the International Court of Justice.

On 17 November 2005 she was appointed as a judge at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, which they had previously belonged as an ad litem judge since December 2003. At the Conference of the States Parties to the Rome Statute in January 2009 she was elected by 73 votes for a term of nine years as a judge at the International Criminal Court and heard there at the Trial Division.

For their achievements Van Den Wyngaert has won several awards. She received the 1977 Janine Segers Price, 1980 Winkler Prins Price and 1985 awarded by the VUB for an international legal work, having 2500 € doped Henri Rolin price. Uppsala University she drew 2001 with the honorary doctorate from. In addition to her the price of the Human Rights League was founded in 2007 in Antwerp awarded.
