Henri Rolin

Henri Rolin Marthe Sylvie ( May 3, 1891 in Ghent, † 20 April 1973 in Paris) was a Belgian lawyer and politician. He was, among other things 1947-1949 as President of the Belgian Senate, from 1930 to 1961 as a professor of international law at the Université Libre de Bruxelles, and from 1968 to 1971 as President of the European Court of Human Rights.

Life

Henri Rolin was born in 1891 in Ghent and studied law at the University of Ghent, where he received his doctorate in 1919. After the end of World War II, he was involved among other things in the drafting of the Treaty of Versailles. From 1930 until his retirement on his 70th birthday in 1961, he was professor of international law at the Université Libre de Bruxelles, including from 1947 to 1950 as Dean of the Law School. Together with Charles de Visscher and some other legal experts and diplomats, he founded in 1947 the Belgian royal Institute of International Relations ( Royal Institute for International Relations, IRRI). In addition, he was from 1924 a member of the Institut de Droit international ( Institute of International Law ), which in 1963 held in Brussels 51st meeting he led as president. From 1959 to 1971 he acted as a judge at the European Court of Human Rights, which he presided as President of 27 September 1968 to 5 May 1971. In this office he was succeeded by the British jurist Humphrey Waldock.

Henri Rolin was from 1931 a member of the Belgian Workers' Party ( Belgian Werkliedenpartij ) and later by its successor organization, the Belgian Socialist Party ( Parti Socialiste Belge ). From 13 March to 31 March 1946, he served as Minister of Justice of Belgium and of 11 November 1947 to 6 November 1949 as President of the Belgian Senate, where he served from 1932 to 1968. In 1948 he was appointed Minister of State. In the Belgian municipality of Waterloo Boulevard Henri Rolin bears his name. The Centre de droit international (Centre for International Law ) of the Université Libre de Bruxelles since 1976 gives the Prix Henri Rolin for outstanding research in the field of international law and international relations. In addition, at the University designated as a Chaire Henri Rolin Honorary Chair of visiting professors.

Herin Rolin died in Paris in 1973. His father Alberic Rolin, his uncle Gustave Rolin - Jaequemyns and his son Edouard Rolin Jaequemyns were renowned lawyers in the field of international law and partly in high-ranking offices in the Belgian policy operates.
