Albert Lilar

Albert Jean Julien François Baron Lilar ( born December 21, 1900 in Antwerp, Antwerp, Belgium; † 16 March 1976) was a Belgian professor, liberal politician and several times Minister of Justice.

Biography

After school he studied law and worked as a lawyer in Antwerp after his doctorate in law. He dealt in particular with maritime law and international private law and was at times also President of the International Seekomitees (Comité Maritime International). He was also later a professor of law at the Université Libre de Bruxelles.

After the end of the Second World War, he then also began a political career and was founded in 1946 as a candidate of the Liberal Party for the first time elected a member of the Senate, where he represented the interests of the District Antwerp until 1971.

In August 1946 he was appointed by Prime Minister Camille Huysmans first time as justice minister in a government and belonged to the Cabinet Huysmans on until March 1947. Between August 1949 and June 1950 he was in the cabinet of Gaston Eyskens again Minister of Justice.

Prime minister Achille Van Acker appointed him in April 1954 again unto the Minister of Justice in his third government, he served until the end of Van Acker's term of office in June 1958.

In the subsequent second government Eyskens he was in June 1958, first deputy prime minister. In this capacity, he dealt in particular with the management of the Round Table on the sovereignty of the Belgian Congo. Subsequently, he was again Minister of Justice between September 1960 and April 1961.

For his services he was honored on July 15, 1969 with the honorary title of Minister of State. According to him, the Prix Albert Lilar of the Comité Maritime International in the field of publications is named for the Law of the Sea. 1976 of the noble title of Baron, he was awarded shortly before his death.

Lilar, who was married to the writer Suzanne Lilar, is the father of writer Françoise Mallet- Joris and Marie Fredericq - Lilar, an art historian and specialist in the art of the 18th century.
