Chris Woods (musician)

Chris Woods ( born December 25, 1925 in Memphis, Tennessee; † 4 July 1985 in New York) was an American saxophonist (baritone and alto saxophone) and flautist of swing, rhythm & blues and modern jazz.

Chris Woods started his career in his hometown of Memphis, then in St. Louis, where he worked in the Jeter - Pillars Orchestra. With this swing orchestra he played in 1952 his first album, Somebody Done Stole my blues, a. 1962 Woods moved to New York City where he worked as a sideman for Sy Oliver, Dizzy Gillespie and Ted Curson. In the late 1960s he took part in the recordings of the jazz opera Escalator Over the Hill. In 1974 he played in the band by Clark Terry, with his big band, he can also be heard on several recordings as a soloist on alto saxophone and flute.

The mid-1970s he played in Europe under his own name, a number of albums a, 1978, he took with Chicago musicians such as pianist Jim McNeely and trumpeter Greg Bobulinski Album modus operandi for the label Delmark Records on.
