Christian August Friedrich Garcke

Christian August Friedrich Garcke ( born October 25, 1819 in Bräunrode, Saxony -Anhalt, † January 10, 1904 in Berlin) was a German botanist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Garcke ".

Life and work

Friedrich August Garcke was born the son of a forester. He studied theology in Halle since 1840, but turned after passing the state doctoral examination and final botany to. He moved to Berlin in 1851 and was hired in 1865 at the Royal Botanical Museum in Berlin. Garcke was appointed in 1867 in the Examination for Pharmacists, habilitated in 1869 and was appointed in 1871 as an associate professor of medicinal plants. Among colleagues he became renowned as a major connoisseur of higher plants in Germany.

Works

In 1848, the first, in 1856, the second part of his Flora of Hall appeared. Already in 1849 he published his major work, the flora of northern and central Germany, which has been extended to the 13th edition 1878 Flora of Germany and the 17th edition (1895 ) was illustrated at ( Illustrated Flora of Germany ). The last edition was published in 1972 and 23 after a long break after the 22nd edition of 1922.

Garcke was also co-editor of a variety of botanical treatises and previous editions of improved plants. From 1867 to 1882 he was editor of the journal Linnaea that was set for it.

Others

The birthplace in Braunröde is known today under the name " Garckestift ". It is inhabited, and is a listed building.
