Christian Gottlieb Jöcher

Christian Gottlieb yokes (* July 20, 1694 in Leipzig, † May 10, 1758 ) was a German scholar, librarian and lexicographer.

Life

Christian Gottlieb Jöcher was the son of the merchant Johann Christoph Ridges and his wife Magaretha, the daughter of the physician Michael Ettmüller. He grew up with his grandfather, the Leipzig city judge Leonard Baudiss, on which two excellent private teacher introduced him to Master Börner and Master Paul Abraham King, who led his youthful education. They woke in him in the early years of life, a certain interest in history, geography and genealogy. In 1708 he continued his education at the Gymnasium in Gera continued and two years later at the Gymnasium in Zittau.

In 1712 he entered the University of Leipzig to study medical sciences. Contact with Gottfried OLEARIUS made ​​sure that he did during his training more devoted to the philosophical sciences. He frequented the philosophical lectures by Hardt, Gottfried Polycarp Müller, Rüdinger and August Friedrich Müller. Here, a special predilection coined the Oriental languages, on which he at Henry Benedict Stark and Johann Georg Abicht weiterentwickelte.So he had already in 1712 acquired the academic degree of bachelor in 1714 and the academic degree of Master of Philosophy.

Then he himself began lectures at the Leipzig Academy to keep established itself as an assessor from 1715 to the Faculty of Philosophy and also acquired in 1716 the Bachelor of theological sciences. In 1730 he became a full professor at the Faculty of Philosophy and also took over in 1732 as professor of history at the University of Leipzig. After he had in 1735 received his doctorate in theology, he was given from 1742 the Superintendence as a librarian at the University Library of Leipzig, where he initiated the alphabetical catalog.

His writings are partly philosophical, partly collected works. His most famous work is the universal scholar Lexicon (Leipzig 1750/51, 4 volumes). It is a continuation and extension of the Compendiösen scholars Lexicon by Johann Burckhardt Menckestraße which he had published in 2nd and 3rd edition ( 1725, 1733). This work has been extended by Johann Gottlob Wilhelm Dunkel ( 1755-60 ) and Johann Christoph Adelung ( 1784-87 ). Where Heinrich Wilhelm Rotermund (Bremen 1810-22, 6 volumes) continued this work. Moreover, it was Jöcher 1720 editor of Deutsche Acta Eruditorum.
