Christian Ruben

Life

Ruben formed since 1823 in Dusseldorf under Peter von Cornelius, since 1826 in Munich, where he worked on the boxes of the new glass windows of the Regensburg Cathedral and the Church Auer. In 1836 he was entrusted with the compositions for the decoration of the castle Hohenschwangau. He then devoted himself to genre painting in oil. In 1841 he was appointed director of the Academy to Prague, where he decorated the Belvedere with wall paintings. He also painted for the Prince Salm from a grand premises and delivered to the Church in Turnau three altarpieces. From 1852 to 1872 he was director of the Academy at Vienna, where he died on July 9, 1875. His grave is in the cemetery woman Chiemsee.

Rubens works are carried out with warm feeling and strictly distinct individuality, but its significance lay primarily in his teaching.

Of his sons, has become the oldest, Francis (1842-1920), also dedicated to the paintings. He has formed on the Venetians and painted historical genre paintings of brilliant color.
