Christine Enghaus

Christine Enghaus, pseudonym of Johanne Louise Christine Engehausen (* February 9, 1817 or 1815 Braunschweig, † June 29, 1910 Vienna) was a German stage actress and wife of the German dramatist Friedrich Hebbel.

Early years

Christine Engehausen grew up in a large family with the under poor conditions. Since her father died before the age of seven, she had to contribute from now through labor for subsistence of the family. At the age of seven, she came to her mother's initiative for children's ballet of the Brunswick Court Theatre. Because of their acting talent, she joined soon on small roles until she was finally discovered and promoted by K. Köchy.

Breakthrough

From 1829 Enghaus belonged to the ensemble of the Court Theatre in Brunswick. In 1833 she played Joan of Arc in Bremen and had thus her acting breakthrough, which earned her an immediate commitment to the city. Soon they came upon the theater in Oldenburg to Hamburg City Theatre, where her future husband Friedrich Hebbel saw them on stage for the first time. 1840 Enghausen was already famous, she received an engagement at the Burgtheater in Vienna, where she was employed until 1875.

Marriage to Friedrich Hebbel

On May 26, 1846 married Enghaus in Vienna the German dramatist Friedrich Hebbel. Enghaus that occurred further in Vienna, but also in Weimar, embodied after marriage mainly Hebbel's tragic female figures. From the marriage with Hebbel had two children: Emil (1846-1847) and Christine ( 1847-1922 ).

It rests at the Protestant Cemetery Matzleinsdorf, on the side of her husband (size 19, tomb 38). In 2005 in Vienna Penzing ( 14th district ) was named the Christine Enghaus - way to her.

Afterlife

Enghausens importance (eg as a secure source of funding for her husband Friedrich Hebbel ) can also be seen that there are two novels with her as the main character - sh. "Literature".
