Christoph Hegendorff

Christoph Hegendorf (* 1500 in Leipzig, † August 8, 1540 in Lüneburg ) was a humanist poet, Lutheran theologian and jurist.

Life

Hegendorf attended the Thomas School in Leipzig. He studied the basic subjects and theology in his native city of Leipzig. As a humanist, he becomes a student of Peter Mosellanus. With Philipp Melanchthon, he was in correspondence, who recommended him to Poznan. There Hegendorf was for a time at the Lubrański Academy as a teacher of Greek. As Mosellanus died in 1524, he was appointed as his successor to the chair of Greek at Leipzig. Later he went in the same capacity at the Viadrina in Frankfurt ( Oder).

This activity apparently did not satisfy him. He had his doctorate in Frankfurt to the doctor juris. As he called for practical work, he went already in 1537 as General Counsel of the city to Lüneburg. Apparently he had organizational skills. He was so much praised that the University of Rostock entrusted him with the task of reforming the higher education system. As Hegendorf returned to Lüneburg, in 1539, he was appointed superintendent of the city. No sooner had he assumed office, he was carried off by the plague in 1540. Theologically, he could no longer are active. From him are editions of the classics and some Latin school comedy.
