Christoph was a son of Duke Otto II of Brunswick -Harburg (1528-1603) from his second marriage with Hedwig (1535-1616), daughter of Count Enno II of East Frisia.

After the death of his father he took over jointly with his brother Wilhelm August the government Harburg. In January 1604, the homage of the city of Harburg for the ducal brothers followed.

Christoph married on 28 October 1604 Harburg with Elisabeth ( 1567-1618 ), daughter of Duke Julius of Brunswick- Wolfenbüttel and widow of Count Adolf XI. of Schaumburg. The marriage remained childless and Christoph died two years later after a fall in the Harburg castle. The motto of the Duke was Consilio et armis ( By wisdom and weapons).

As the oldest brother, Johann Frederick (1557-1619) waives any government responsibility, the next brother Otto Christoph took place as a Community Regent.
