William Augustus, Duke of Brunswick-Harburg

Wilhelm August von Braunschweig- Lüneburg- Harburg ( born March 15, 1564 Harburg, † March 30, 1642 ibid ) was the owner of the owner of the rule Harburg.

Life

Wilhelm August was a son of Duke Otto II of Brunswick -Harburg (1528-1603) from his second marriage with Hedwig (1535-1616), daughter of Count Enno II of East Frisia.

Wilhelm August was considered extremely taught and how his father was a strict member of the Lutheran doctrine. In 1575 he became Rector of the University of Rostock and later continued his studies at the University of Leipzig on. In 1582 he undertook a grand tour to France and England, and then went with his brothers to the University of Helmstedt. 1594, he again went on trips that took him through Germany, Poland, Switzerland, Italy, Holland, Livonia and Denmark. After the death of his father he took over jointly with his brothers Christopher and Otto III. the government Harburg, after whose death he ruled alone.

Wilhelm August 1618 began the construction of the castle in Moisburg. After the death of Duke Friedrich Ulrich of Brunswick- Wolfenbüttel, he received the Obergrafschaft Hoya from its legacy. Wilhelm August died unmarried and childless. His legacy fell to the Dukes of Friedrich von Celle and August of Wolfenbüttel.

Wilhelm August was buried in the royal crypt in St. Mary's Church in Celle.
