Christopher Foster (bishop)

Christopher Richard James Foster ( born November 7, 1953) is a British Anglican theologian. He's since February 2010 Bishop of Portsmouth in the Church of England.

Life

Foster grew up in the industrial region of the West Midlands and in Surrey. He studied Economics ( Economics) from the University of Durham and the University of Manchester. He graduated with a Master of Arts. He then worked for a short time from 1976 to 1977 as a lecturer in Economics at the University of Durham. He then studied theology at Westcott House Theological College, University of Cambridge.

In 1980 he was ordained a deacon. 1981 followed the ordination to the priesthood. From 1980 to 1982 he was Vicar ( Assistant Curate ) in the district of Tettenhall Regis in Wolverhampton Deanery in the Diocese of Lichfield. From 1982 to 1986 he was Chaplain ( Chaplain ) on Wadman College, Oxford University. At the same time he was vicar of the University Church of Saint Mary, with responsibility also for the municipalities of Saint Cross and Saint Peter, in Oxford. In 1986 he became pastor ( Curate ) in Southgate, North London. This church office he held until 1994. At the same time he was at this time until 1994 Continuing Ministerial Education Officer for the Episcopal Church District Edmonton, North London. 1994, he became Vice - Dean (Sub - Dean ) and Residenzkanoniker ( residentiary Canon ) to the Abbey of St Albans ( Cathedral and Abbey Church of St Alban ) in Hertfordshire.

He was appointed Suffragan Bishop of Hertford in 2001. From 2007 to 2010 he was Chairman ( Chairman ) of the Finance and General Purposes Committee of the University of Hertfordshire. In February 2010 he was appointed as successor to Kenneth Stevenson Bishop of Portsmouth.

Membership in the House of Lords

On January 7, 2014 Foster was in his capacity as Bishop of Portsmouth on the principle of seniority as the next most senior bishop of the Church of England as a clergyman Lord Member of the House of Lords. On February 6, 2014 he was officially introduced with the support of Peter Robert Forster, Bishop of Chester, and Stephen plates, the Bishop of Wakefield, the House of Lords.

Private

Foster has been married to his second wife Sally Foster. His first wife Julia died in 2001. He is the father of two grown children (a son, one daughter ) from his first marriage. Foster has great interest in the current issues in the areas of politics and economics. His leisure time activities and hobbies Foster is one of the attending entertainment events, visits to the county of Shropshire and his passion for Wolverhampton Wanderers.
