Peter Forster

Peter Robert Forster ( born March 16, 1950 in Solihull ) is a British clergyman and in 1996 Bishop of Chester.

Life

Forster attended Merton College, University of Oxford and graduated in 1973 with a Master of Arts degree in chemistry from. He then studied theology at the University of Edinburgh. There he obtained in 1977 a Bachelor in Theology and in 1985 a Ph.D. in philosophy. From 1978 to 1980 he attended the Edinburgh Theological College.

In 1980 he became a deacon, ordained a priest in 1981. In 1980 he became auxiliary vicar in the district of Mossley Hill in Liverpool and held this office until 1982. From 1983 to 1991 he worked as a tutor at St John's College, Durham. From 1991 to 1996 he was Vicar of Beverley Minster, Beverley.

He was appointed the 40th Bishop of Chester in 1996.

Forster is married since 1978 with Elisabeth Anne Forster (nee Stevenson ). They have two sons and two daughters.

Membership in the House of Lords

Forster belongs since 2001 as a clergyman Lord the House of Lords. His political areas of interest include the Forster science policy, energy policy, education and constitutional issues.

Work in the public

2001 Forster spoke in Rome at the Tenth Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops of the Catholic Church. the " The Bishop: Servant of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the hope of the world " was themed as verbundenener in faith delegate of the Church of England and gave a short homily.

In canonical questions Forster represents a conservative point of view. This was particularly evident in his attitude to the issue of homosexuality. Forster is regarded as a staunch opponent of homosexuality.

2003 Forster sparked a controversy when he suggested that homosexuals should be treated psychiatrically and could reorient itself in this way. In the context of this statement was also investigated more against him. The investigation, however, were eventually discontinued and there was no charge. In the same year he signed an open letter as one of the bishops of the Church of England who opposed the nomination of Jeffrey John, an openly gay priest who lived in a committed relationship, as Auxiliary Bishop of Reading by Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams,. The signatories included the Bishops of Bradford, Carlisle, Chichester, Exeter, Liverpool, Rochester, Southwell and Nottingham and Winchester.
