Chumbe Island

Chumbe is is a privately owned island of Zanzibar, which is known primarily for its ecological economy and its coral reefs. The only 0.25 km ² island is located about seven kilometers from Unguja away. The island was a closed military zone, so their original fauna and flora could get.
In 1994, the island and the surrounding coral reef was declared a national park and has since Chumbe Coral Park Iceland, Ltd.. ( CHICOP ) managed. This non-profit organization promotes marine research and a limited eco-tourism on Chumbe. The CHICOP could win a Global 500 Award for its exemplary, sustainable park management in 2000.
