Cichlasoma

Salvins cichlid ( Cichlasoma salvini )

Cichlasoma is a genus of cichlids ( Cichlidae ). They live in tropical South America east of the Andes, in waters with clear and white water.

Features

Cichlasoma species are similar to those of the genus Aequidens, in contrast to these, they have a bright rimmed spot at the base of their dorsal fin, a dark front of the gill cover and an irregular spot on the caudal fin. Most fish carry six horizontal stripes on the body sides. Their scales are relatively large, the base of the dorsal and anal fin are in contrast to Aequidens, Krobia, Bujurquina, Tahuantinsuyoa, most Laetacara, and Nannacara more or less scaly. Wild Live fish are usually not more than ten inches, in some species, the males can be 15 inches long, females remain always smaller.

Species

Originally Cichlasoma was a collective genus of nearly 200, including Central American and very large expectant species were counted. After the formation of new species (eg Amphilophus, Archocentrus, Heros and Thorichthys ) are currently twelve species classified in the genus Cichlasoma
