Cigoli

Ludovico Cigoli, Lodovico Cardi da actually Cigoli ( born September 12, 1559 Castelvecchio di Cigoli (now San Miniato, the district Cigoli ); † June 18, 1613 in Rome ) was an Italian poet, painter, sculptor and architect of the transition from Mannerism to Baroque.

Life

Born in Tuscany, near the village of Cigoli at Empoli artist came into the workshop of the painter Alessandro Allori, where he remained four years at the age of 13 years. A poisoning forced him to visit his hometown to recovery. To 1579 brought him Bernardo Buontalenti returned to Florence in order to keep him busy in his workshop as a painter and train him in the architecture. Here he also got to know Santi di Tito, in whose workshop he switched. About Santi he acquired the painting style of Michelangelo 's successor.

Counter in 1581 his first major work, the fresco Christ in Limbo for the grande Cloister of Santa Maria Novella was born. From 1587 an intensive examination of the work Federico Barocci is observed. 1596 is seen by developing your own distinctive style of the early Baroque period a further development step. Around 1604 he moved to Rome to participate in the tender for the design of the facade of St. Peter's, which he lost to Carlo Maderno.

In 1608 he was again ordered back to Florence to take over as artistic director for public decoration work. It was followed by many orders of high personalities in Florence, Rome and many other places in Italy.

For the Florentine art Cigoli was of utmost importance by the Baroque style in Florence introduced by overcoming the more than half a century solidified mannerisms and presents him with a new surface treatment for the Baroque style altogether a milestone in the history of art. As a poet, but also as an artist, he maintained a close friendship with Galileo Galilei.

From Cigoli 45 works, including 30 dated works are known. Among his pupils may be mentioned: Giovanni Biliverti, Sigismondo Coccapani, Andrea Commodi, Cristofano Allori, Filippo Paladini, probably Domenico Fetti and Aurelio Lomi.
