Description

The bushy and columnar -growing species of the genus Cipocereus are sometimes much branched and reach stature heights of up to 3.5 meters. The cylindrical, slightly woody shoots have a diameter of 2 to 5 centimeters. In the 4 to 21 ribs are round, white or brown areoles from which few to many spines arise which sometimes may be missing and are of variable shape.

The white, tubular flowers open at night and sometimes stay open until the following day. The Perikarpell and the flowers are ribbed tube, covered more or less circular and with a thick blue wax in cross section. The scales are small and far apart.

The spherical to ovoid, not aufreißenden fruits are intensely glaucous gray - blue. The flowers rest is enduring. The brownish black to black, more or less dull seeds are broadly oval and 1 to 2 millimeters long.

Systematics and distribution

The species of the genus Cipocereus are widespread in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais.

The first description of the genus was made in 1979 by Friedrich Ritter. The type species of the genus is Cipocereus pleurocarpus. Belong to the genus of the following types:
