Newcastle lies on the east coast of the state at the mouth of the Hunter River about 160 km northeast of the city of Sydney. The area includes 71 districts and towns, including Adamstown, Bar Beach, Beresfield, Birmingham Gardens, Broadmeadow, Callaghan ( University), Carrington, Civic, Cooks Hill, Elermore Vale, Fletcher, Georgetown, Hamilton, Hamilton North, Hamilton South, Hexham, The Hill, Islington, Jesmond, The Junction, Kotara, Lambton, Maryland, Maryville, Mayfield, Mayfield East, Mayfield North, Mayfield West, Merewether, Merewether Heights, Minmi, Newcastle, Newcastle East, Newcastle West, New Lambton, North Lambton, Sandgate, Shortland, Stockton, Tarro, Tighes Hill, Warabrook, Waratah, Waratah West, Wickham, Wallsend and parts of Adamstown Heights, Black Hill, Highfields, Kotara Heights, Kotara South, New Lambton Heights and Rankin Park. The seat of the City Council is located in the Newcastle area.

Management

The Newcastle City Council has 13 members, who are elected by the residents of the LGA. The three members are from the Wards 1 to 4, the chairman and Mayor ( Mayor ) is also elected by all residents of the LGA. The four electoral districts are defined independently of the villages.
