Ciudad Guayana is a city located in Bolivar State, in the east of Venezuela. It lies on the south bank of the Orinoco River at the confluence with the Río Caroní. The city, which was officially established in 1961, consists of the old town of San Félix and the new town of Puerto Ordaz, located on both sides of the river Caroni. The city, whose expansion is planned for a population of one million inhabitants, 40 kilometers pulls along the south bank of the Orinoco. With nearly 800,000 inhabitants, it is a very large city for Venezuelan standards. It is one of the five major Venezuelan ports, as most manufactured in the state of Bolivar products through the port in the Atlantic Ocean are shipped.

History

Ciudad Guayana was founded in 1961 as a project of the Corporación Venezolana de Guayana by the two cities were united on both sides of Caroní, namely San Félix and Puerto Ordaz. Since then, many industries have settled in the city, because of its geographical position gives you many benefits. Since its foundation, the city of two towns has become the most important industrial center of the Guayana region. It is the center of the growth of an under populated region of Venezuela. Much of the criticism it was because of the design of the city of Puerto Ordaz, which had been created by designers from MIT and Harvard in the early 1960s. On 13 November 2006 was the second bridge over the Orinoco, which inaugurated Puente Orinoquia in Ciudad Guayana.

Economy

The city of Ciudad Guyana is the economic center of the State of Bolivar and the center of the steel industry in Venezuela. Significantly, while one of the city's tourist attractions is the Guri hydroelectric plant, which produces a significant part of the Venezuelan demand for electrical energy and one of the largest hydroelectric power plants of the earth.
