Guri Dam

The Guri Dam (Spanish: Represa Raúl Leoni de Guri or Embalse de Guri ) is a 4250 km ² large reservoir in the Venezuelan state of Bolivar.

It was created by the construction of the dam embankment of Guri. It is located about 130 km southeast of Ciudad Bolívar and 90 km southwest of Ciudad Guayana removed and dammed the river Río Caroní about 90 km above its confluence with the Orinoco on. Besides producing electricity, the dam also serves to flood protection.

Reservoir

The reservoir is about 130 km long and up to 70 km wide; its depth is at the maximum of 170, an average of 30 m. With its surface area of 4,250 square kilometers, and its volume of 138 km ³ he is one of the largest reservoirs in the earth.

The lake is rich in fish and therefore a paradise for anglers who fish primarily the pavon, a cichlid. There are also many other uses for recreation.

Structures

From 1963 to 1969, a 106 m high and 690 m long earth and rockfill dam was built, with a water level of 215 m above sea level was realized. The associated hydroelectric power station had an installed capacity of 1750 MW. After a performance increase of the value was in the year 1978 2065 MW, provided by 10 turbine units.

To reflect the increased demand for energy, the dam ( 11,409 m according to other sources ) was in a second phase from 1976 to 7426 meters extended and increased to 162 m. Thus, enlarged the lake and reached a top water level of 272 m above sea level. During the construction part of the dam was equipped with a 1300 m long concrete gravity dam and a second relief channel was created. In addition, a second machine was built, in the other ten turbines were installed with a capacity of 630 MW. The facilities were officially opened on 8 November 1986.

There are three flood relief in order to October is required, especially in the rainy season from May to dissipate the enormous amounts of incoming water up to 25,500 m³ / s.

Power generation

With a capacity of up to 8,850 MW and an annual production of around 40,000 GWh of electricity, the power plant at the Guri Dam, one of the largest hydroelectric power plants of the earth. Purely mathematically, it covers alone, more than a third of the national electricity consumption. In fact, however, a portion of the electricity generated is exported to Colombia and Brazil.

Name

The hydropower plant was given its present name Central Hidroeléctrica Simón Bolívar in 2006 due to a decree of President Hugo Chávez. In the years 1974-2006 the plant known as the Central Hidroeléctrica Raúl Leoni, after the former Venezuelan president.
