Claire Martin (singer)

Claire Martin OBE ( born September 6, 1967 in Wimbledon, London, England) is a British jazz singer.

Life and work

Martin knew as a child, the songs of Judy Garland; other influences were the Songbook albums Ella Fitzgerald. She studied singing and acting in New York City and London. Your career as a professional singer began with a commitment to the passenger liner Queen Elizabeth 2, where she sang for two years in the theater bar. In 1991, she founded her own jazz quartet, with whom she recorded for the Scottish label Linn Records. Their attendants were Jim Mullen, Jonathan Gee, Clark Tracey and bassist Arnie Somogyi. Their debut album, The Waiting Game was honored by The Times as one of the "Album of the Year". In the same year she appeared on the Glasgow International Jazz Festival. 1995 was followed by a performance at London's Ronnie Scott 's Jazz Club; In 1997 she released the album Make This City Ours, on which she was accompanied by musicians like Antonio Hart, Gerard Presencer, Peter Washington and Gregory Hutchinson.

Martin also sang with the band by Mick Hutton, with Ray Gelato's Giants Of Jive and in the area of free music with John Stevens. They had also been recordings by Geoff Gascoyne, Stephane Grappelli, Martin Taylor and Bobby Wellins. Furthermore, she appeared as a co-host in the radio program Jazz Line Up on BBC Radio 3.

Martin has received numerous awards including the British Jazz Award and BBC Jazz Award for Best Vocalist.
