Claro, Switzerland

Claro is a municipality in the district of Riviera, in the district of Riviera in the canton of Ticino in Switzerland.

It consists of the fractions " Scubiago ", " Duno ", " Brogo ", " cassero " and " Torrazza " and is part of the agglomeration of Bellinzona.

History

Claro was first mentioned in 1120, the population of the municipality is, however, as archaeological finds prove graves until the Bronze Age. In the Middle Ages Claro was a judicial and administrative center in the diocese of Como. Between 1402 and 1422, and by 1449 the place was under the rule of the original cantons.

Attractions

  • Above the village sits this Benedictine monastery of Santa Maria Assunta on a rocky plateau. The approximately a dozen nuns scoring community lives in seclusion. The monastery can be reached via a forest road, an air cable car or an old mule track. The church, built in 1684, dedicated to the feast of the Assumption, respectively on August 15th goal of a procession,
