Claude Dagens

Claude Dagens ( born May 20, 1940 in Caudéran, France) since 1993 Bishop of Angoulême and was admitted to the Académie française in 2008.

Life

Claude Jean Pierre Dagens was born the son of a municipal official. He attended high school Montaigne in Bordeaux and studied Catholic theology at the École française in Rome and at the Institut Catholique de Paris with degrees in theology, humanities, and Christian archeology. On 4 October 1970, he was ordained for the Archdiocese of Bordeaux as a priest. After two years as a parish priest in Paris, he was appointed in 1972 as professor in the inter-diocesan seminary of Bordeaux. From 1981 to 1987 he simultaneously served as dean of the theological faculty of Toulouse. In 1987 he was ordained Auxiliary Bishop of Poitiers and Titular Bishop of Vulturaria by Archbishop Marius Maziers. On 15 June 1993, the appointment would come to the Coadjutor Bishop of the Diocese of Angoulême, where he succeeded his predecessor on 22 December of that year.

In the French Bishops' Conference he is a member of the Doctrine Commission and chairman of the working group on religious indifference and visualization of the Catholic Church.

In April 2008 he was inducted into the Academy française and followed as the holder of the first chair on René Remond.
