Claude Lancelot

Claude Lancelot (* around 1615 in Paris, † 1695 in Quimperlé ) was a Jansenist monk and linguist.

Life and work

Lancelot took part in 1638 in the construction of the school in the abandoned abbey Port-Royal -des- Champs. He was a tutor to the Duke of Chevreuse and the Duke of Bourbon -Conti. After the destruction of the Jansenist movement in 1660 he had to leave the abbey. In 1672 he retired to the Abbey of Saint- Cyran en Brenne, where he was Benedictine. Later he went into exile in Brittany. Along with Antoine Arnauld he wrote the grammar of Port -Royal Grammaire générale et raisonnée which dealt with the influence of grammar on the sound and the appearance of language.
