Claws Mail (formerly Sylpheed -Claws ) is a free e- mail client and news reader for Unix-like and Windows operating systems. In contrast to Sylpheed, from which it was removed, it offers additional features such as skins and plug-ins ( for example, spam filters and virus scanners ).
Claws was recommended by Chip.de as a graphical mail client for Linux and also fulfill this role as part of the free Gpg4win encryption suite for Microsoft Windows systems.
Claws Mail is written in C and is based on version 2 of the GIMP Toolkit ( GTK ). Messages are stored in the MH format, alternatively, the mbox format can be used by plug-in.
It is distributed as free software in source code under the terms of the GNU General Public License ( GPL). It runs on Unix-like (GNU / Linux, xBSD, Mac OS X, Maemo, ...) and Windows operating systems and can be installed directly from the standard package sources with major Linux distributions.
The development of Claws began in April 2001 as a development version of Sylpheed, which should serve to test new features. On 18 January 2005 Version 1.0.0 has been released. In August 2005 it was spun off into an independent software project. Initially called the software is still " Sylpheed -Claws ". On 30 January 2006 published version 2.0.0. On 7 November 2006, it was renamed " Claws Mail ", to emphasize that the code is being developed independently of Sylpheed. On 3 September 2007 she released version 3.0.0.
