Clock DVA

  • Jane Radion Newton

Clock DVA is a band from Sheffield, England, which was named after Anthony Burgess ' A Clockwork Orange, and the number word for " two " ( " dva " ) is derived in most Slavic languages. In the liner notes of the album Buried Dreams the band's DVA refers to the Hebrew word avd ( od ) for the magic number 11 in the Kabala.

Band History

The band Clock DVA was founded in 1978 by Adi Newton and Steven Turner, after Adi Newton previously with Martyn Ware (later The Human League and Heaven 17 ) in the band The Future, as well as with members of Cabaret Voltaire and Genesis P -Orridge (later Throbbing Gristle and Psychic TV) had played.

After two self-produced cassettes ( "fragment" and "Deep Floor" ) appeared with the third cassette " White Souls In Black Suits " on Genesis P. Orridges label Industrial Records, the first commercial release of Clock DVA, which still strongly of partially jazzy improvisations was, however, already marked by Adi Newton concise voice.

Following these two early works the first regular album " Thirst ", which could be placed high up in the British independent charts and to date sold nearly 100,000 copies appeared.

After this moderate success, the band signed a lucrative contract with Polydor and released in 1982 the album "Advantage"; but without Steven Turner, who had since left the band, but with Paul Browse and Dean Dennis. After the world tour for this album it came to the temporary dissolution of the band, as calculated Adi Newton left the band and together with Robert Baker, the project The Anti Group gave life to realize his visions of experimental music. It was not until 1987 he was reconciled with Dennis and Browse and launched Clock DVA new.

The style of Clock DVA now changed significantly. The 1989 released album "Buried Dreams" was produced purely electronic, less experimental, reflecting Newton's interest in digital technologies resist. On this album are many ( sound - like voice ) samples used in films such as THX 1138, RoboCop or The Thing from Another World and amplify the dark atmosphere of the songs. Topics such as digital terrorism ( " The Hacker " ) and repetitive song structures create an influence by the German band Kraftwerk - especially with their albums The Man Machine and Computer world - close.

Shortly after the release of " Buried Dreams " left Paul Browse the band and founded with Johnny Klimek the Techno - Ambient Project Effective Force. He was replaced by Robert Baker, who remained until the provisional conclusion here.

The '92 album " Man- Amplified " was the first concept album of Clock DVA and includes thematically to the single "The Hacker" by. The style of Buried Dreams has been expanded and refined and musically represents the hard - cool digital aesthetics. In addition to music, there is for each song on the album in the CD booklet, a book authored by Adi Newton essay relating to the topic. During the subsequent tour, Clock DVA presented visually similar to power plant, because the static stage show was accompanied by projections of computer-animated videos.

This appeared in the same year the album " Digital soundtracks " is clearly ambient or trance -heavy as " Man- Amplified " and is a collection of fictional, singing non- film music dar. According to the accompanying text back it goes to work during the recording of " Buried Dreams ". The text insert of the album refers to the Swiss doctor Hans Jenny, the writer Stéphane Mallarmé as well as the influence of the human brain by Mind Machines.

During the recording of the '93 album " Sign" Dean Dennis left the band; Adi Newton and Paul Baker completed the previously last regular Clock DVA album as a duo. This album revolves around alien intelligences and is stylistically closer again to "Buried Dreams", less cool and much catchier.

In 1994 with the retrospective and mix compilation of '89 - '93 " Collective", the last album for a long time.

On June 10, 2011 Clock DVA occurred in Leipzig at Wave- Gotik-Treffen for the first time since 1994 on.

In the summer of 2013 appeared with "Post -Sign " (which is previously unpublished and unfinished instrumentals contains ) a successor to "Sign"; newer material should be published later in 2013 as a limited edition USB stick.
