Coccoloba is a plant genus of the family of the buckwheat family ( Polygonaceae ). German name for the genus are " sea grape tree " and " Seetraube ".

Distribution and location

The genus is widespread in tropical to subtropical regions of America, including the Caribbean islands ( Neotropics ).

Description

The members of this genus grow as evergreen shrubs or trees. The leaves are sorted by type directly on the branch sessile or stalked; they are constantly changing. The leaves are lanceolate to round depending on the type or vice versa - elliptical; they have a smooth edge.

The terminal inflorescences are racemose and overhanging. The individual flowers are stalked. There are functionally male and female flowers. The perianth is white to green and white and bell-shaped overgrown. There are five tepals exist. In the male flowers eight stamens are present, which are fused at the base; a stamp is still rudimentary. In the female flowers three pens are available; Stamens are rudimentary. As fruit brown to black achenes are formed and they contain only one seed.
