Croton ( Codiaeum variegatum )

The genus Codiaeum is a genus within derr family of Euphorbiaceae ( Euphorbiaceae ). There are known about 15 to 17 species. Known as an ornamental plant is the croton ( Codiaeum variegatum ), also known as miracle shrub.

Description

Codiaeum species grow as shrubs or rarely trees. The plant contains a colorless, slightly toxic milky sap. The alternate, stalked leaves are simple or sinuate, coriaceous, glabrous and often multicolored. Stipules are small or absent.

Codiaeum species are monoecious ( monoecious ), rarely dioecious ( dioecious ) getrenntgeschlechtig. They are slender, axillary, racemose inflorescences, which are available individually or in pairs in the leaf axils, often hanging over. The five-fold ( rarely three - or sixfold ) flowers are always unisexual. There are five ( rarely three or six) sepals and petals present in a flower. The petals are small, they can be absent. Male flowers contain many (15 to 100) free stamens. In the female flowers three carpels are fused into an ovary, with only one ovule per subject. The fruit capsules have a diameter of about 9 mm.

All plant parts are poisonous.

Dissemination

Natural deposits are found in: Malaysia, Bali, Irian Jaya, Java, the Sunda Islands, the Moluccas, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Australia (in Queensland) and Polynesia.

The genus belongs to the tribe Codiaeum Codiaeeae in the subfamily Crotonoideae within the Euphorbiaceae family.

In the genus Codiaeum there are about 15 to 17 species:

  • Codiaeum affine Merr. This endemic species is found only on the island of Pulau belonging to Sabah Banggi.
