Cognac Public Garden

The City Garden Cognac is a public park ( jardin public ) in the center of the French town of Cognac in the Charente. He emerged a style a English garden and two adjoining plots of land on which are today the Town Hall and the Art Museum of the city.

History

In 1889 the city acquired the Hôtel de la Grange otard, three years later moved into the City Hall. The building was redesigned by architect Alfred Leroux, who added a bell tower and a monumental staircase. The landscape architect Édouard André turned the park into a sunken garden to multiple viewpoints, and a water surface.

The museum was housed in the building of the acquired 1921 Hôtel d' Angeac Dupuy, was entrusted with the design of which Antoine Raymond Clavery. This created taking advantage of the natural hill forming a natural theater, uniting the two parks while maintaining the design of Édouard André, but with narrower lanes and without major viewpoints.

In 1999, 288 of the 720 existing trees felled by a storm. Landscape architect Jean -François Galinet took the opportunity to access the redesign on the designs of Antoine Raymond Clavery and Édouard André.

Description

The park has an area of approximately seven hectares and is located in the city center, visible far from the streets that lead along the surrounding lattice fence. From the main entrance there is a panoramic view over the hilly park area to the monumental staircase of the City Hall. On the right side is slightly below a duck and swan pond, which is part of a maze of artificial rivers and waterfalls.

One of the park sites is limited by a rose garden with a pergola, an intermediate wall separates this from a row of terraced houses. Like many great gardens in the English style as this has multiple Follies:

  • Gothic tower, built in 1835, has a remarkable combination of materials and colors. He is surrounded by a small pond and is a listed building.

The nature of the theater near the museum was built on an existing natural hill. When held concerts it is from the courtyard of the museum accessible, where once stood a war memorial.
