Colaeus

Kolaios (Greek Κωλαῖος; Latin Colaeus ) was a Greek merchant, sailors and shipowners from Samos.

According to Herodotus ( IV Hdt. 152) he found himself on a journey from Greece to Egypt in a storm and was past the " Pillars of Hercules ", ie the Straits of Gibraltar, driven. As the first Greek he had landed in the port of Tartessos, that silver-rich city near modern Cadiz. There Kolaios have been able to conclude a highly profitable trade, so that he had returned with a profit of 60 talents in the home. A tenth of the gain he used for the production of a griffin boiler, which he founded as a votive offering to the Temple of Hera at Samos.

The travelogue of Kolaios applies the research to be authentic, in particular, based on findings westphönizischer ivory combs in Samos. In general, the trip to the BC 630 model is dated.
