Cold Spring, also known as Cold Spring -on-Hudson, is a small town right on the Hudson River about 80 km north of New York City in the northeast of the USA. The place is part of the Town of Philipstown in Putnam County. In 2000, Cold Spring had 1983 inhabitants; to 2009, the population remained the same.
Geography
Significant at the place is the unique location in the middle of the Hudson Highlands. Cold Spring is bordered to the west by the Hudson River and is surrounded by the Hudson Highlands State Park.
History
The first settlers settled in what is now Cold Spring from 1730 down. Beginning of the 19th century was along the Hudson River a village that lived mainly from trade. Crucial for the following upswing of the town was the construction of the nearby ironworks West Point Foundry in 1818. Here weapons and ammunition were especially made for the Union Army during the American Civil War, so in the second half of the 19th century, numerous workers and with attracted them further trade to Cold Spring. With the closure of the cottage in 1911 and the place lost in importance again. Since the 1970s, the Cold Spring has been developed increasingly touristy.
