Coldstream

Coldstream ( Scottish: An t - Alltan Fuar ) is a free city ( " burgh " ) in the Scottish border country ( Scottish Borders ) with 1920 inhabitants ( 2004 estimate ). It is located in Berwickshire on the north bank of the River Tweed. On the southern shore begins England.

The city is known as the home of the company founded in the year 1650 ( and still existing ) Coldstream Guards British Army regiment and also as the place where in 1296 Edward I of England invaded Scotland.

In the 18th and 19th centuries Coldstream was because of its good transport links, a popular center for clandestine marriages, similar to Gretna Green. Notable buildings in the city are the customs house where marriages were made and Hirsel House Mansion.

Since 1990, between Coldstream and Benne Court in France is twinned.
