Colón, Entre Ríos

Colón is capital of the department in the east of the Argentine province of Entre Ríos. Colón is located on the western shore of the Uruguay River, which is navigable from Colón. On the other side lies just south of Colón and connected by the General Artigas Bridge with the Uruguayan city of Colón Paysandú. In the classification of municipalities in the province of Entre Ríos Colón is one of the municipalities of the first category.

History

The town, like many places in Latin America by Christopher Columbus (Spanish: Cristóbal Colón ) is named, was founded in 1873 by Justo José de Urquiza, caudillo of Entre Ríos and later the first President of the Federal Republic of Argentina.

Tourism

Colón is a tourist center with upscale hotel structure, a casino and campsites. There are also thermal springs and corresponding spa treatments.

Attractions

  • Palacio San José. The former country residence of General Urquiza, located between Concepción del Uruguay and Colón, was declared a National Monument.

National park

  • National Park El Palmar (about 60 km from the city). The National Park El Palmar is a sanctuary for the yatay palm ( Syagrus yatay ).
